Spring Carnival, Community Update --Sara Shepard, SAPSA Communications

The Spring Carnival and Book Fair have been postponed until Friday, June 2nd, as many in our community are grieving at this time. Coordinators will be reaching out to volunteers (thank you!) and rescheduling these events.

Kids may have different levels of awareness of what happened in our community. As previously mentioned, if you have concerns about your student or think they could use additional support, please reach out to Dr. Duke, the school social worker, or the counselors.

If you are looking for resources to guide talking to your kids about this or other difficult subjects, this article may be helpful: https://www.npr.org/2019/04/24/716704917/when-the-news-is-scary-what-to-say-to-kids

Please also take care of yourselves at this time. However we are experiencing this loss (deeply--as the loss of a friend, more broadly--feeling less safe, or so many other possible ways), I hope you are able to tend to it. Grief is carried not only in our hearts and our thoughts, but also in our bodies. It usually comes more naturally to kids, but we grown ups may need to make a conscious effort to move our bodies. Even writing this, I keep finding that I am holding my breath. Move, breathe, be together, be alone - take care of yourselves and each other.

If you would like to drop off a note, card, or anything else to express support for the impacted family, you can leave it in the box in the school office. We have also heard that there will be a community gathering and vigil this Friday night at 7pm at Langford Park, and we will share updates about that event as we receive them.

Talent Show - May 19th

Thank you to the volunteers who are already hard at work putting together the SAP Talent Show. Auditions were held this week, and it's all coming together!

It's still possible for your student to sign up for the Big Group Song!

Would your student like to participate in the Big Group Song? Maybe your child loves to sing and wants every opportunity to do so? Maybe your child wants to sing, but is just a little too shy to take solo stage? Maybe your child and their friend really want to sing together at the Talent Show, but haven’t had a chance to figure out an act?

Well, friends, that is where the Big Group Song comes in! We’ll gather a big group of students together across grades to sing our hearts out. This year, the kids will be singing Try Everything by Shakira from the movie Zootopia. All SAP kids are welcome to participate even if they are not doing an act in the Talent Show.

In order to participate kids will need four things:

  1. Permission! Parent permission is also required for the Big Group Song. Please sign the e-permission form HERE.

  2. Rehearsal! Children need to attend one or both of the rehearsals for the Big Group Song. This is mandatory. The rehearsals will be Tuesday, May 16th from 3-4 pm and Wednesday, May 17th from 2:15-3:15PM at school (exact location TBD).

  3. Sound Check! Children need to arrive at Murray Middle School on the performance day (May 19) by 5:15PM for a sound check and rehearsal before the show starts.

  4. Practice! Children can get started right away learning the song by singing along with this video: https://youtu.be/RUux3WL8ZJw

We are so excited to hear their voices singing out and filling up the auditorium!

Spring Book Fair -- Friday, May 12th or Online May 5-16th

It is Book Fair time! In addition to the Spring Carnival, our Spring Book Fair is also next week. 50% of all proceeds go directly to St. Anthony Park Elementary. Here is the schedule so you can prepare with your student:

  • Children will preview the sale with their class on Thursday, May 11th during the school day. During that time, they can note the items they may like to buy in order to budget for the following day or to make a purchase online.

  • On Friday, the Book Fair presale will be open for business in the school library from 7:15-8:30AM for students to purchase books, posters and other fun items. Families are welcome!

  • On Friday night, the Book Fair sale will be open for business from 5-7:30pm in the school library or cafeteria during the Spring Carnival.

If you can’t make it to the fair or you are busy volunteering, you can order online at https://www.scholastic.com/bf/sap from May 5 to May 16th. SAP also receives 50% for any online sales and if you order online, we can deliver the books to your child’s classroom for an awesome surprise.

  • Don’t have cash or a check? Don’t want to send your student with cash on the day of the presale/carnival? You can set up an eWallet, a cashless payment for your student. Go to https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/parent-how-it-works.html?fairID=5082202

  • You can set an amount for your student to spend, and they only need to give us their name and teacher’s name at checkout. Any money left will be saved in your student’s eWallet account for future fairs. Note: it will NOT be refunded to their card like it was in past years.

Are you interested in lending a hand with the Book Fair? We sure could use the help. We are putting together a team to set-up on Wednesday afternoon, as well as staffing the preview and presale. It's a nice time to get over to the school and see the kids get excited about literacy! Please sign-up HERE.

Talent Show - May 19th

The SAP Talent Show is such a heart warming event! It's so fun to see the creativity, talent, and enthusiasm - best of all is the way the kids encourage and cheer for each other, even when things don't go exactly as planned.

We are looking for volunteers to coordinate with Kelly Weeks, who is graciously taking the lead in making this year's talent show an entertaining and memorable event.

Staff Interview: Suzanne Gural

ree

Ms. Suzanne: My name is Ms. Suzanne, and I’m here with Ridwan Said from Ms. Lee’s class, and he is going to interview me today, so we’re just going to get right to it! What’s your first question?

Ridwan: My first question is when did you work here as a librarian?

Ms. Suzanne: I started working here last September. I used to work at a different school, and I worked in the front office. I actually worked with Ms. Michele, who works in the front office here. We used to work together. And then she told me that there was a job opening here in the library, so I said, “Okay! I’ll come on over!” And here I am!

Ridwan: Do you have any pets?

Ms. Suzanne: I have two really fat cats, Marvin and Izzy, and they are 16 years old. They are old.

Ridwan: Do you have any kids?

Ms. Suzanne: I have two boys, and they are all grown up and they don’t live with me.

Ridwan: Do you have any cousins or sisters?

Ms. Suzanne: I have two sisters. One lives here and one lives in Mankato. And I have one brother that lives in Mankato. I’m the oldest of all of them. How many brothers and sisters do you have?

Ridwan: I only have one brother, and I have…..

Ms. Suzanne: He’s counting.

Ridwan: Yeah, I don’t really know how many, because I keep losing track.

Ms. Suzanne: There must be a lot!

Ridwan: There are…One was Ricwan, she’s the baby sister. Two is Suhaylah. You probably know her. She’s in kindergarten. She is six years old. She used to be five. Rihanna is third. She is fifteen. Rihanna came first. She was my first sister. My older brother Tariq, he was second-born. And Warda was the third. And I was the fourth, and my other sister Suhaylah was the fifth, and my other one was the sixth. And I have five sisters.

Ms. Suzanne: That’s a lot.

Ridwan: Oh yeah, I think either four or five.

Ms. Suzanne: Awesome! Awesome!

Ridwan: When did you think about being a librarian? Did you like reading books or writing?

Ms. Suzanne: I do love reading books. I love reading books. I read books all the time. My favorite thing is, I love cookbooks. I don’t cook a lot, but I like to read the recipes and look at the pictures. So I have a lot of cookbooks at home. I don't cook a lot, but I love to bake.

Ridwan: Really? What do you bake?

Ms. Suzanne: I love to bake cookies and muffins. My husband told me that I should sell them because he thinks they are really good! I think it's relaxing to mix up a batch of cookies and then share them with my friends and neighbors. Maybe some time I'll bring them to school.

Ridwan: Oooooooh.

Ms. Suzanne: Do you think that people will start asking me to bake cookies for them when they see this?

Ridwan: (laughs)

Ridwan: When you were a kid, did you not know how to read?

Ms. Suzanne: I did know how to read. I learned how to read, probably when I was in kindergarten, I think.

Ridwan: When I was in kindergarten and first grade, I couldn’t read.

Ms. Suzanne: When did you learn how to read?

Ridwan: When I was in second grade and when I started my tutoring at the library next to our house, and every Saturday. And that’s when I started to read. I get better every Saturday, and that’s how I’ve been reading a lot.

Ms. Suzanne: And you check out a lot of books in the library, so I know that you’re reading, because I see all the books that you’re getting. That’s awesome!

Ridwan: There’s a book called Bad Guys. There’s a movie of that. I just love the movie. I’ve finished it, like the whole thing, three times.

Ms. Suzanne: So did you read the book first or watch the movie first?

Ridwan: I watched the movie first, and then I saw the book, and I got it.

Ms. Suzanne: That’s great! You’re doing such a good job, Ridwan, all your reading. That’s awesome. All right, do you have any more questions?

Ridwan: Nope! How about you? Ms. Suzanne: I have just one. What do you think about school at St. Anthony Park? Ridwan: I love it!

Ms. Suzanne: You love it?!?!?

Ridwan: That’s why I’m probably going to stay here until sixth grade.

Ms. Suzanne: Until you’re all done?

Ridwan: Yup.

Ms. Suzanne: That’s awesome!

Ridwan: Because in sixth grade, you go to another school.

Ms. Suzanne: Great!

Ridwan: I wish when you were in sixth grade, you could still come here.

Ms. Suzanne: You could stay here?

Ridwan: Yeah, until you’re a grown up.

Ms. Suzanne: You must really love it.

Ridwan: I love it.

Ms. Suzanne: I love when I see you in the halls and you wave at me.

Ridwan: I love you, too!

Ms. Suzanne: Thanks so much! Ridwan: See ya!

Ms. Suzanne: Bye!
